Okala Foundation
The Okala Foundation is focused on educating village children in Ngombe. They also try to reduce the incidence of disease by providing the children that they sponsor with mosquito nets. Thanks to Kathryn Jennex for this one. Here’s how you can help.
Okala Foundation is a non profit, grass roots organization founded by Tamara Davy in 2006. Okala which means “care” in the local language is staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers who all have a strong passion for helping others. Okala has dedicated its work to improving the quality of life for people and primates in Cameroon.
The main focus of Okala’s work so far has been the education of the village children and the medical needs of the villagers. Okala is currently building a two room school house in Ngombe, and will be building a school in the neighboring village of Meyenne in the near future. The school children, with continued sponsorship through Okala Foundation, will receive a hot lunch every day, and the school supplies needed for the school year, plus a mosquito net to help reduce the spread of diseases like Malaria.
Okala implemented their Harvest of Change program earlier this year. This program distributes donated seeds to families of the villages to plant their own gardens, and supply them with vital foods which will help them to increase their intake of vitamins and minerals seriously lacking in their diets. Okala is also utilizing this project for beginning a garden at the school which the children will help to care for and will supplement the hot lunch program.
