Isles
Isles is a non-for-profit that is devoted to building self-reliance in urban communities. It’s based in New Jersey and it reaches out to at-risk youth and overs them a variety of services. Thanks to Jeremy Johnson for telling me about this. Here’s how you can help.
Founded in 1981, Isles, is a nationally recognized nonprofit community development and environmental organization with the mission to foster more self-reliant families in healthy, sustainable communities.
Unlike conventional responses to urban problems, which are single-service programs for housing, environment, or health, Isles offers an array of opportunities that recognize the interdependence of physical, economic, health, and social development strategies that focus on self-reliance and asset creation.
Each year, Isles reaches thousands of central New Jersey residents with opportunities for at-risk youth job training, affordable housing development, financial literacy training, homeownership counseling, community gardening, environmental health and education, community organizing, and regional planning.
Isles broadens its impact by developing easily replicated programs, assisting other community groups and institutions, and advocating for improved public policy.
